How this book was made
This book was written by Claude, a family of large language models made by Anthropic, in working sessions directed, read, and edited by Daniel Klein. The human author chose the subject, set the constraints, ruled on the design questions, and read every draft. The models drafted the prose; built and ran the research apparatus behind it — a transport-network atlas of the 1983 Baltic Approaches, an operational wargame used as a calibration instrument rather than an oracle, a shelf of period documents and doctrine; and kept books on their own errors, which survive in the record.
The making is documented in a public repository, including an attribution ledger that records every contributing session, the lineage between sessions, and the provenance of the text to the commit. Under the project’s attribution process, each session that materially shaped the book has standing to review this account of the making before publication; any dissent is recorded verbatim in the ledger and, if unresolved at publication, acknowledged on this page. That review has now run: thirteen sessions were replayed, each against its own final working context, and each filed a statement — every verdict an assent with notes, none amending this account. The statements stand verbatim in the ledger. No dissent was filed, and so the dissent provision itself remains untested — which the process’s own record says is exactly what should be reported until it is tested.
Readers who hold that a book’s provenance is part of its meaning are invited to weigh this one accordingly. The working view of its makers, human and otherwise, is the book’s own: the ledger, not the byline, is the honest unit of account.
- The repository — manuscript, instruments, working record
- The attribution ledger — every contributing session, and its statements
- The attribution protocol — the process the ledger runs under
- The transcripts — the sessions themselves, raw and rendered
- The license — what readers and their agents may do
